The first coffee human beings ever tasted were single-origin coffees from Yemen, exported from the historic Port of Mokha. From there, they traveled through the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, and parts of Asia, introducing the world to an unforgettable experience. When those people wrapped their hands around those little warm cups and took their first sip, they tasted an explosion of flavors—nuts, dried fruit, caramel, bitter but somehow sweet, a tantalizing symphony of the senses that lingered across the palate. But one flavor stood above the rest: deep, rich, complex chocolate.

This chocolate essence was the taste that captivated the world, a signature of Yemeni coffee. As coffee spread to the Americas and Southeast Asia, adapting to new lands, it evolved, embracing diverse profiles. Yet, with the rise of mass production, that unique chocolate flavor began to fade. Those who had known Mokha coffee found themselves longing for its natural richness, and so cafés began adding chocolate to their drinks to mimic Yemen’s original profile. As a result of this practice, “Mocha” became synonymous with chocolate-infused coffee drinks. But nothing hits quite like Yemen.
